The Four Agreements – Book Review

The Four Agreements a book by Don Miguel Ruiz is all about making promises to yourself to work towards something better. The author suggests some serious suggestions just like many other self help books. This book offers suggestions to fix your life by applying four agreements in your life. On that note lets begin The Four Agreements – Book Review with overview in my words.

Introduction –

What you’re seeing and hearing right now is nothing but a dream. On the other hand, Dreaming is the main function of the mind and according to author our mind dreams 24/7. Humans are dreaming all the time. It is called the dream of the planet because it is the collective dream of billions of smaller personal dreams which together creates dream of family, a dream of society, then of a city, a country and finally a dream of humanity. The author says that the dream of planet includes all of rules by society, laws, beliefs and its different cultures. At the same time humans are born with the unique capacity of learning things, how to dream. Overall, the humans who lived before us teach how to dream the way society dreams.

Attention is the ability we all humans have to differentiate and to focus only on that which we want to perceive. Do you know why we learned everything we know? The adults around us hooked our attention and put information into our minds repeatedly. We learned how to behave in society, what not to believe. As well as what is acceptable and what is not, what is good or bad, beautiful or ugly; it was all there.

The Four Agreements – Highlights

We all are pretending to be someone else because of the fear of being punished & the fear of not getting fit into the society. Due to which we keep on pleasing others while killing our own identity. We have made thousands of agreements only so that we can fit into the society. The author share four agreements that will tell us who we are, how to behave and what is possible and what is not. Here are The Four Agreements that can fix most of our problems.

Be Impeccable with your words –

This is the first and most important among the other four agreements and difficult one to honour. Always say what you mean. Do not use negative words against yourself and others as well. It sounds simple but let me tell you that it is very powerful. Why word? Because your words have the power that you’ve to create. It is a force, a power you have to express and to communicate in the society. Words are the tool of magic and an ability to think. Depending on how it is used, the word can set you free or it can enslave you more than you think. This is the first you need to make if you want to live happy and free.

Don’t take anything personally –

The author says whatever is happening around you, don’t take it personally. At the same time don’t be immune to the opinions and actions of others. As the matter of fact the author talks about the personal importance and our assumptions we make in our mind. Remember not everyone around is talking about us only. Similarly, Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.

Don’t make assumptions –

Humans have tendency to make assumptions of everything around us. The problems with making assumptions is that we believe they are the truth. However, We take those assumptions seriously and personally- then we blame them and react. Instead of making assumptions find the courage to ask questions. On the other hand, with clear communication, all of your relationships will change not only with your partner but with everyone else. Likewise, you no need to make assumptions because everything becomes clear.

Always do your best –

Above all No matter what you do, put in your best efforts. In fact this is the one agreement that allows other three to become deeply ingrained habits. For this reason Author says the fourth agreement is about the action of first three: Always do your best. In short he says under any circumstances, always do your best, no more and no less. Simply, keeping in mind that your best is never going to be the same from one moment to the next. It will take longer to accomplish your goals. But if you do your less, it leads to judgement, self-doubt and regrets.

Concluding

Moreover, there is also a fifth agreement which encourages us to see the truth, to recover our authenticity, and to change the message we deliver not only to ourselves but to everyone around us. To summarise this book is all about personal growth and self-help and more of that. Lastly, I hope this helps and I highly recommend this book to read it once. You can do better !
